Obviously gearing to the point of trivialising challenges shouldn't be efficient, but the breadth of the game makes me feel it should be an option.

As I upgrade to more advanced materials the tech level of my tools should be going up too! Currently the damage system in Starbound is built around an armor penetration system. So, it seems best case I get a temporary buff, worst case I get killed outright.
It'd be a big waste if the ship can't be fully customised with the sandbox building systems.
